Nike Shox is the mechanical cushioning system that Air Force 1 designer Bruce Kilgore began exploring in 1984 and that first reached shelves on the Shox R4 in 2000. Across the Shox TL, R4, Z and Ride 2, these are our eight favourite colourways right now, and our number one pick is the Nike Shox Ride 2 'Black'.

The Nike Shox Ride 2 'Black' (2026) leads our list, and it sits alongside the rest of the Nike Shox range live now at PUSHAS, where every pair is authenticated by hand before it ships.

What makes a Shox a Shox

Kilgore's early prototypes tested hinges, springs and mechanical columns before Nike settled on hollow polyurethane foam columns. On most models, four circular columns sit in a square under the heel: they compress on impact, spring back and keep the heel stable. The Shox R4 set that template in 2000.

The family has since split into distinct shapes. The Shox TL, first released in 2003, extends the columns along the full length of the foot, with moderator plates and a TPU heel plate for stability. The Shox Ride 2, originally part of Nike's early-2000s Alpha Project, combines four heel columns with a Max Air unit in the forefoot. The newest, the women's-exclusive Shox Z, launched in 2025 with a kitten-heel-inspired stance: a low forefoot stack that slopes up into small columns at the heel.

How we ranked them

These are our picks, judged on four things: how well the colour blocking suits the silhouette, the materials and details, the story behind the release and how easily the pair works into real outfits. We covered all four current Shox shapes and made sure there is a pink pair in the mix.

1. Nike Shox Ride 2 'Black'

The Nike Shox Ride 2 'Black' (style code IO4296-002) released on 23 December 2025 and takes the Ride 2 almost entirely black. The upper mixes black mesh and leather, and the detail that lifts it is a carbon-fibre-style print across the Swooshes and TPU overlays, with red and white Shox branding cutting through the black.

The Ride 2's modern run began with Supreme, whose Shox Ride 2 collaboration released in the US on 23 June 2022; Nike returned the model to its mainline range in 2024. The 'Black' pair is the stealth version of that comeback, and our favourite of the lot.

2. Nike Shox TL 'Sunrise Gradient'

The Nike Shox TL 'Sunrise Gradient' (style code AV3595-004) released in 2019 with a warm sunrise-gradient upper, framed by black overlays and a blacked-out sole unit.

3. Nike Shox TL 'Pink Foam' Women's

If you are searching for pink Shox, start here. The Nike Shox TL 'Pink Foam' Women's (style code HV2520-001) released for Holiday 2024 in a Metallic Platinum, Pink Foam, White and Pinksicle colourway. Metallic platinum trim runs through the lace unit, overlays and sole against the pink and white upper.

4. Nike Shox R4 'Black Metallic Silver'

This is one of the R4's earliest colourways. The Nike Shox R4 'Black Metallic Silver' pairs a black synthetic leather upper with metallic silver and Max Orange accents, and its four compressive columns lift the heel exactly as the first Shox did in 2000. The R4 era is also the Vince Carter era: he wore the Shox BB4 at the 2000 Olympics, where his dunk over Frédéric Weis became central to Shox marketing.

5. Nike Shox Z 'Bred' Women's

The Shox Z is the family's most fashion-led shape in our view, and black and red is our pick of its colourways. The Nike Shox Z 'Bred' Women's launched among the Shox Z's debut colourways for Holiday 2025, with a mesh and textile upper and red Shox columns at the heel. Press at launch linked the black and red look to the Martine Rose Shox MR4.

6. Nike Shox TL 'Vapor Green Black'

The Nike Shox TL 'Vapor Green Black' (style code AV3595-300) arrived in spring 2025 with a gradient upper that starts green at the base and fades as it climbs, held in place by black overlays over the full-length Shox unit. It is the most seasonal TL on the list.

7. Nike Shox R4 'Obsidian Reflective'

The Nike Shox R4 'Obsidian Reflective' (style code IM8462-451) released on 23 November 2025. Obsidian leather sidewalls meet a pebbled Diffused Blue leather upper, the columns are finished in Diffused Blue and reflective details run across the upper, adding visibility at night.

8. Nike Shox TL 'Black University Red'

The Nike Shox TL 'Black University Red' keeps the TL's full-length columns in a black and University Red colourway.
