The Gel-Kayano line is named after ASICS designer Toshikazu Kayano. The Gel-Kayano 12 launched in 2006. Design and look

The Kayano 14 is the sleekest of the three. Yamashita built it around the idea of flash, and it keeps the look of a late-2000s road runner.

The Kayano 20 is more engineered. It has an architectural design, and the defining detail is the FLUIDFIT cage over the mesh upper. The result is busier and more technical than the 14.

The Kayano 12.1 is the chunkiest. Its upper takes its structure from European gothic armour, with overlays over open mesh underlays, and it sits on tooling taken from the Gel-Nimbus 17. The upper follows the 2006 original while the sole comes from a later running shoe.

The tech underfoot

All three carry ASICS GEL cushioning, but they do it differently. The Kayano 14 is inspired by its original 2008 tooling, with GEL technology for impact absorption. The Kayano 20 uses dual GEL inserts with a GUIDANCE TRUSSTIC support system for stability.
