Kilgore's early prototypes tested hinges, springs and mechanical columns before Nike settled on hollow polyurethane foam columns. On most models, four circular columns sit in a square under the heel: they compress on impact, spring back and keep the heel stable. The Shox R4 set that template in 2000.

The family has since split into distinct shapes. The Shox TL, first released in 2003, extends the columns along the full length of the foot, with moderator plates and a TPU heel plate for stability.
