Centering, corners, edges and surface: how Beckett's subgrades decide the grade, and what it takes to earn a Black Label.
Beckett Grading Services scores every card it subgrades on four categories: centering, corners, edges and surface. Those four scores sit on the label beside the overall grade, and they decide the colour of that label. A Black Label is the Beckett slab where all four subgrades are a 10, the top combination on its scale.
Graded slabs are now live at PUSHAS too, led by the PSA-graded Mega Charizard X ex Special Illustration Rare #125 in the graded cards and slabs collection.
The cards inside a box like the Topps Chrome Update Series Basketball Mega Box 2025-26 are the ones collectors send for grading. Sealed boxes across the Topps range are live at PUSHAS. Here is how Beckett's subgrades work, how they add up to an overall grade, and what separates a Pristine 10 from a Black Label.
Beckett grades cards on four key categories: centering, corners, edges and surface. Each gets its own score on the 10-point scale, in half-point steps, and all four are printed on the label with the overall grade. That breakdown is what Beckett, which began grading in 1999, is known for: rather than a single number, you can see where a card was strong and where it lost ground.
Subgrades are not compulsory: Beckett's base service can be ordered with or without them, while its faster tiers include them.
Beckett states that the overall grade is not a simple average of the four subgrades. It uses an algorithm in which the lowest subgrade is weighted most heavily, because it represents the most obvious defect.
Beckett gives two worked examples. A card with centering 9.5, corners 9.5, edges 9 and surface 8 received an 8.5: the strong centering and corners pulled it up from the 8, but not further. A card with centering 9.5, corners 9.5, edges 8.5 and surface 9 received a 9, because, in Beckett's words, the most it could receive was one half-grade above its lowest subgrade. In practice, the weakest subgrade tells you the most about the final number.
On Beckett's scale, 10 is Pristine, 9.5 is Gem Mint and 9 is Mint. A Pristine 10 is already the top grade, but it does not automatically earn a black label. Beckett's rule is that the black label is reserved for a Pristine 10 with all four subgrades at 10. Beckett gives Pristine 10 a gold label, so a Pristine 10 without four 10 subgrades carries gold, not black.
Beckett's published standard for a 10 is exacting, and a black label needs it in all four categories. Centering must be 50/50 all around on the front and 55/45 or better on the back. Corners and edges must be perfect to the naked eye and virtually flawless under intense scrutiny. The surface needs flawless colour, with no print spots and no registration or focus imperfections. Beckett applies the quad-10 black label to modern cards only; its vintage grades, for cards from 1980 and earlier, are excluded.
Beckett colour-codes its labels so high grades can be spotted at a glance. As Beckett defines them, black is for Perfect Pristine 10s, the quad-10 cards; gold is for Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 9.5; and silver is for all other grades.
The holder itself is tamper-evident, and Beckett's new label, announced in May 2026, adds a larger final grade, unified subgrades and a QR code that links to the card's verification page with its grading details and population data.
BGS is Beckett's grading line for modern cards, from 1981 to the present. BVG, Beckett's vintage line, covers cards printed before 1981.
| Label | What it means | Built for |
