A fast f/1.8 lens and flip-up screen on the Canon, a 24-200mm zoom and pop-up viewfinder on the Sony: which compact fits how you shoot.
The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III and the Sony RX100 VII are both pocket compacts with a 1.0-inch stacked sensor, 4K video and a 3.5mm microphone input. The Canon is built around a fast f/1.8-2.8 lens and a flip-up screen for filming yourself, while the Sony adds a 24-200mm zoom, a pop-up viewfinder and real-time tracking autofocus.

Canon fits the G7 X Mark III with a 24-100mm equivalent lens at f/1.8-2.8, a 4.2x zoom. Sony gives the RX100 VII a 24-200mm equivalent lens at f/2.8-4.5, which is an 8x zoom. Both start at 24mm, so the choice is reach against aperture: Sony goes twice as far, while the Canon opens to f/1.8 at the wide end.
Both cameras use a 20.1-megapixel 1.0-inch stacked CMOS sensor, so on paper they sit level here. Both record 4K up to 30p, and both have a 3.5mm microphone input.

Canon lists YouTube live streaming for the G7 X Mark III, but notes that cameras shipped from August 2025 do not include it, so check before you buy.
This is where the Sony pulls ahead on features. Sony lists Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF for stills and video on the RX100 VII, and reviewers confirm both.

The RX100 VII also has a pop-up electronic viewfinder. The G7 X Mark III has no viewfinder, so you frame on the screen.
Both have a 3.0-inch touchscreen that tilts up to face forward for selfies. Per CIPA figures, Canon quotes about 265 shots per charge and Sony about 260 with the screen. The Canon charges over USB-C, and the Sony charges over USB. The Canon measures 105.5 x 60.9 x 41.4mm and weighs about 304g with battery and card, while the Sony weighs about 302g with battery.
