The Air Jordan 5 Retro 'Black University Blue' (DD0587-008) is the return of the collegiate-inspired AJ5 colourway widely known as the 'Black Carolina'. Released on 20 June 2026, it is the first retro of the colourway since its 2006 debut, two decades earlier.
Overview
The Black/University Blue-White colourway first appeared in 2006 during Jordan Brand's Lifestyle era, when releases were paired with matching apparel. University Blue ties the shoe to the University of North Carolina, where Michael Jordan played college basketball, which is where the 'Black Carolina' and 'UNC' nicknames come from.
The Air Jordan 5 Black University Blue pairs a black upper with translucent mesh side panels and a reflective 3M tongue. University Blue appears on the lining, the shark-tooth midsole detail and the embroidered Jumpman on the heel, and the shoe sits on an icy translucent outsole. Lace locks carry over from the original Tinker Hatfield design.
The black base makes this one of the easier Air Jordan 5 colourways to wear, with the blue accents adding contrast without taking over. It works with black denim, cargos or a matching University Blue piece, and suits collectors who missed the 2006 pair.
