Behind The HYPE of the Nike SB Dunk Low 'Jarritos' (2023) | The Assist
Welcome back to The Assist, where we delve into why certain shoes attract so much attention, why they generate so much chatter, and why there's so much hype around them.
History of the Nike SB Dunk x Jarritos
In today's spotlight is the exciting collaboration between Nike SB and Jarritos. Essentially, these are SB Dunks, a bit chunkier and padded, designed with durability in mind.
What makes these kicks exciting are the little Easter eggs that connect the shoe to the Jarritos brand.
Before diving into the shoe itself, let's revisit the history of Jarritos. Founded in Mexico in 1950, Jarritos was the country's first-ever soft drink brand. It soon found immense popularity in Canada, so much so that a Canadian company acquired it.
To give you an idea of its popularity, 5,000 bottles of Jarritos are imported into Canada every minute!
Diving Deep on the Nike SB Dunk x Jarritos
The collaboration shoe combines natural and synthetic materials, resulting in a truly distinct design. One of the standout features is the burlap or hemp overlays, a nod to the kind of bag used to carry fruit to the Jarritos factory in Mexico during the 1950s.
The shoe also features light grey leather, a twill Swoosh, and a foam sole for added comfort during skateboarding.
The insoles are plastered with Jarritos branding and a homage to the fruits used in their flavours. The shoe also has an Air Zoom unit, crucial for dissipating the downward pressure that builds up while skating and landing from high ledges or stairs.
This mechanism helps reduce the physical toll on your body, enabling longer skateboarding sessions.
There are a few unique features to these shoes. Additional padding in the heel ensures the foot stays securely in the shoe while skateboarding. A thicker collar and tongue compared to classic Dunks provide extra support.
The foam in the sole is another weight-reducing measure that helps relieve pressure on your feet.
Interestingly, the burlap overlays can be torn away to expose Jarritos' classic orange, an Easter egg that wasn't disclosed by Nike or Jarritos but was discovered by fans after the release.
The shoe comes with several different laces, allowing you to add a personal touch to your pair.
As with most Nike Dunks, these come with an oval lace, which harks back to its use in vintage running shoes. You'll get an oval cream lace, a white lace that comes with the shoe, an oval orange lace, and a spiralized round green lace.
The packaging also deserves a mention. The cream and grey box is a pleasant change from last year's purple and the previous year's rainbow box.
It's always fun to see what Nike comes up with next.
